Grain Surfboards provide a more natural way of becoming “one” with nature. These surfboards are handmade from locally grown, sustainable wood. They provide a tubular alternative to the bogus, unnatural and unrenewable foam boards made by most major surf companies.

The Grain Surfboard craftsmen use local northern white cedar that has been gathered by sustainable forestry professionals. The wood is durable, lightweight and rot resistant, making it an ideal surfboard material that won’t ding or wear like synthetic boards.
However, if you’re looking to surf on a different coast, Grain Surfboards provide a means of avoiding the not-so-local impact of shipping a “locally made” board. You can order a home grown wooden surfboard kit and request whatever materials that you cannot provide yourself. Board kits start at $420.
Founder Mike LaVecchia spent 12 years building snowboards for Burton Snowboards before he decided to move from mountain to sea. He obtained a U.S. Coast Guard Captains License and began running a commercial sailing vessel on Lake Champlain. In 2001, he led the construction of an ‘88 wooden schooner that was built for the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. Mike now applies the classic boatbuilding techniques he learned from that project when he builds surfboards.
